How does Homeopathy work?

Unlike conventional medicine, homeopathy works with the body, stimulating its natural ability to recover.  The medicines prescribed to you by the doctor are designed to suppress symptoms of disease, but in fact, those symptoms are there for a reason.  The human body is an amazing, complex system which deals regularly with stress, striving to maintain a stable but dynamic state of health through auto-regulation.  Medically, this is called homeostasis.  If you catch a virus or have an infection your body may produce a fever to destroy the invader.  When you eat or drink something bad, you may vomit or get diarrhoea.  This is your body’s way of flushing out the poison. Treatment of these or of any disorders with homoeopathy involves giving medicine to activate the body’s natural healing response and boost its immunity, accelerating the process for rapid recovery.  Often patients find that when taking homeopathic medicine, not only are the specific symptoms they came with alleviated but other complaints disappear and they feel a heightened sense of well-being.

The Medecine

Homeopathic medicine, known as remedies, comes in the form of either sweet-tasting tablets, powder or drops, medicated with a diluted extract of a natural substance.  Today, there are literally thousands of different remedies derived from the plant, animal and mineral kingdoms, with new ones being developed all the time.  The choice of remedy is based on the age-old principle that “like cures like”, the Law of Similars, first mentioned in the writings of the famous Greek physician, Hippocrates, later by Paracelsus, then developed into a medical science by the German doctor Samuel Hahnemann during the late 18th century.  Hahnemann started by conducting what he called provings.  This involved giving a diluted form of a substance to a healthy person until he started to display symptoms.  The symptoms were then collated in what is called a homeopathic Materia Medica.  These symptoms displayed during a proving are the very same symptoms which when seen in a diseased individual, indicate the remedy to which he will respond.  As your homeopath, I will be matching the distinctive characteristics of your condition to the symptoms of the remedy which will make you feel better.
